Press Release: 2019 CPA Alberta Tax Clinic Hosted

Wednesday, 10th April 2019 Stevens and Company successfully hosted a two day Volunteer Tax Clinic at Homeland Housing’s Heritage Place Lodge in partnership with CPA Alberta.

A total of 24 personal tax returns for seniors were completed in the two-day long clinic. This tax clinic was held in cooperation with seniors’ homes, community centres, and other not-for-profit agencies. The Tax Clinic Program’s mission is to help low-income Albertans complete their tax returns for free.

Stevens and Company has been serving the Morinville and Edmonton business community since 2017 and recently opened up a new regional office in Red Deer to serve Central Alberta. The firm specializes in corporate and personal tax preparation, tax planning, bookkeeping, and business consulting for privately held businesses.

“We have always believed in giving back to the community and sponsoring this event in partnership with CPA Alberta gave us a chance to help Albertans in our area of expertise. Being a part of a program that helps you help other people gives our firm tremendous satisfaction; we want to be known as active and engaged community problem solvers. Reflecting on the two day volunteer experience, I am very grateful to Homeland Housing and CPA Alberta for helping coordinate the event and to allow us to give back to the community in our own small way” said Mark Stevens, founder of Stevens and Company.

The Tax Clinic program was established in 1973. At that time, tax clinics were introduced as a public service with three pilot tax clinics being held. From mid-March to mid-April, volunteers visit senior citizen homes and social agencies throughout Edmonton and Calgary that are hosted by firms such as Stevens & Company. Since 1973, the program has expanded to include over 100 organizations and more than 500 volunteers annually, however, the focus remains the same – a community service program designed to assist the elderly, disabled, unemployed, and new Canadian citizens that are financially disadvantaged to complete their annual personal tax returns.
